Australian Wine council calls for industry overhaul

The wine grape growers in South Australia are calling for a major industry restructure.

According to Wine Grape Council spokesman Paul Clancy, this vintage could be half of last year's 2 million tonnes, even lower than the 40 per cent forecast by the national grower body.

He says growers and wine markets need to produce higher quality grapes to produce wines for the premium market.

Mr. Clancy says it is not sustainable to return to growing more than 2 million tonnes by 2009.

"If you keep on doing what you're doing than you keep on getting what you're getting," he said.

"There just seems to be no end to the despair in the industry and we think it's time that perhaps we stopped doing what we're doing and do some things a little bit differently."
